The Sports Guy Returns To Action NEXT WEEK

Postby friskysman » 09 Feb 2005, 11:52

So nothing this week except the Monday morning gloat column, nothing the week before the Super Bowl except the mailbag, and a mixed Super Bowl Blog that I would give a C- overall. Not good times for Sport Guy readers these days, huh? Hopefully he gets some rest this week and then turns it up next week. My workdays are becoming exceedingly drab.

Maybe he's using this week to go through his 87,382,384 intern submissions?

Maybe he needs to hire an intern to go through them. :D

Hopefully mine was one of the first submissions. Then he can stop reading the rest and just hire me.

This is classic SG. 5 or 6 colums followed by a week off. Must be nice to be a writer.

Now the web site says we can expect something new tomorrow. I wonder what we'll get? More on the Clippers? The Celts? Spring training preview?

Probably stuff for The Intern: The Contest. That said, whatever it is had better be good.
bosux191820042090: what kills more is that now more than ever the team needs him[A-Rod] to put it on his back, and he can't...i hate to say this, but if given a choice i would rather have ortiz on my team any day

I was away for a week and didn't have time to check out the SG. How upset/startled was I to find out that NOTHING had been added since I left? Brutal.

I think that a couple of articles about the new intern would be great. He should actually have his readers pick the intern from the final 10 canidates.....we could vote someone off each day for two weeks.

Isn't this a Mag week? I'm guessing we get no more than some Intern stuff and an 800 word MLA essay passing as a column on... what, I don't know: the pointlessness of the Pro Bowl, Canseco's book, generic radio topic X?

Oh, and a cartoon. Don't forget the cartoon.

[that said, I have a feeling his Intern stuff might be surprisingly fun]

I don't know, I'm begining to grow tired of his stuff....and the lack of. I remember 2-4 years ago emailing quotes from Bill to my friends almost every article. Now its down to maybe once every 6-7 months. He just has too much on his plate right now and hopefully he gets back to what he does best and I think we all know what that is.

What's the reason for the lack of articles? I pick up the Chicago Sun Times everyday and there's my article from Jay Marrioti each day. He too has a lot on his table but he gets his article out there each day.

Anyone else feel this way?

I think there are a couple key differences between Mariotti's job and Simmons' job. The Sun-Times is clearly Mariotti's employer, and any ESPN time he has is with the Sun-Times' blessing. Whenever he's on Around the Horn the Sun-Times logo is plastered behind him, it promotes the paper, and hopefully sells some extra copies the next day. Having said that, any day that Mariotti doesn't publish a column it's not going to help sell the paper, so the Sun-Times is smart to make sure that remains his focus. ESPN's main strength is its brand, and its much more reliant on getting people to tune into the network than go to its website. ESPN.com tangentially supports the brand, and it's less important in Disney's overall strategy. So if paying their Page 2 authors by the article saves some cash at the expense of a regular publishing cycle, so be it. Mariotti drives sales of the end product, while Simmons only supports the mother ship.
